Subjective Type

Brinjal and Potato belong to the same genus Solanum, but to two different species. What defines them as separate species ?

Solution

Brinjal - Solanum melongena, does not have a storage stem, the edible part is the fruit which is a berry with persistent calyx. Potato - Solanum tuberosum, has underground storage stem called tubers (hence, the name tuberosum) that store starch, and are the edible parts. Therefore, even if Potato and Brinjal belong to the same genus, they have distinct specific epithet.
