Subjective Type

Give the chemical test to distinguish between. Hexane (I), $$MeCH = CHCl (II)$$, propylchloride (III), and $$CH_2=CHCH_2Cl(IV)$$

Solution

$$(IV)$$ is allyl chloride which reacts with $$AgNO_3$$ in cold to give a white precipitate of $$AgCl, (I)$$ does not have $$(Cl)$$ group, so no reaction.

$$(III)$$ is $$1^oRX$$ which reacts with $$AgNO_3$$ in hot to give a white precipitate of $$AgCl$$, since $$(III)$$ is less reactive than $$(IV)$$.

$$(II)$$ is vinyl chloride which is inert even when heated and does not give white precipitate with $$AgNO_3$$.

$$(I)$$ can be distinguished from other by adding, $$Br_2$$ is not decolourised by $$(I)$$ while in others ( alkenes), it disappears.
