Hydrocarbon $$(A)$$ reacts with bromine by substitution to form an alkyl bromide which by Wurtz reaction is converted to gaseous hydrocarbon containing less than four carbon atoms. $$(A)$$ is _______.

A$$CH_{3} - CH_{3}$$
B$$CH \equiv CH$$
C$$CH_{4}$$
Correct Answer
D$$CH_{2} = CH_{2}$$

Solution

Hydrocarbon (A) is methane $$\displaystyle (CH_4)$$. It reacts with bromine by substitution to form methyl bromide $$\displaystyle CH_3-Br$$
$$\displaystyle CH_4+Br_2 \rightarrow CH_3-Br+HBr$$
Methyl bromide by Wurtz reaction is converted to gaseous hydrocarbon containing less than four carbon atoms.
$$\displaystyle 2CH_3Br+2Na \rightarrow CH_3-CH_3 +2NaBr$$
In Wurtz reaction, when same alkyl halide is used, the product alkane has even number of C atoms. The hydrocarbon containing less than four carbon atoms with even number of C atoms is ethane $$\displaystyle (CH_3-CH_3 )$$.
