Name the final product of the following reaction: Toluene is treated with a mixture of $$conc. HNO_{3}$$ and $$conc. H_{2}SO_{4}$$.

Solution

Conc.$$HNO_3$$ and conc.$$H_2SO_4$$ is the reagent of nitration where nitronium ion acts as electrophile. Toluene undergoes nitration to give ortho and para nitrotoluene isomers, but if heated it can give dinitrotoluene and ultimately the explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT).
