The element tellurium. Te, reacts with chlorine to form a single solid product, with a relative formula mass of 270. The product contains 52.6% chlorine by mass. Calculate the molecular formula of this chloride.

Solution

Here the formula mass is given as 270

So in this case you would find 52.6% of 270
$$\Rightarrow$$ 52.6% of 270 = 142.

So no. of moles of $$Cl$$ is,
$$\Rightarrow$$142/35.5 = 4.000

So we have 4 moles of $$Cl$$.

Now remaining 47.4% of 270 = $$ 127.98 \sim {128} $$

No. of moles of $$Te$$ is,

$$\Rightarrow$$ 128/128 = 1

Hence we have molecular formula as $$TeCI_4$$.
