Each mature sperm consists of a head, midpiece, and flagellum. The head consists almost entirely of the nucleus. Part of the nucleus is covered by the acrosome, a vesicle that differentiates from the Golgi complex. The acrosome contains proteins, including enzymes, that help the sperm penetrate the egg. Mitochondria are located in the midpiece of the sperm, provide the energy for movement of the flagellum.
