Subjective Type

What are the two types of pure substances? Give one example of each type.

Solution

Pure substances are classified into two categories:
a) $$\text{Element}$$ b) $$\text{compound}$$

An $$\text{element}$$ is homogeneous in nature made up of only one kind of atom. For example, iron and silver are made of only iron and silver atoms.

A pure substance, basically composed of two or more elements and chemically combined in a fixed proportion is called a $$\text{compound}$$. Therefore, water is a compound. It has two elements, hydrogen and oxygen, combined in a fixed ratio.
