Subjective Type

What happens when? Iodine is reacted with hypo solution.

Solution

Sodium thiosulphate is a colourless crystalline solid. It is sodium salt of an unstable acid, thiosulphuric acid $$(H_2S_2O_3)$$. It is also known as hypo.

Iodine solution is decolourised by sodium thiosulphate (hypo) as sodium tetrathionate and sodium iodide are formed. Both are colourless and soluble.

Hypo is oxidised by iodine quantitatively.

$$2Na_2S_2O_3+I_2\rightarrow 2NaI+Na_2S_4O_6$$

This reaction is involved in iodometric titrations in the presence of starch indicator.
