Reproduction and Growth in Plants
Both a short day plant and a long day plant can produce flower simultaneously in a given place. Explain.
Write three differences between short day and long day plants.
Short day plants are those plants that flower when exposed to day lengths shorter than the critical point whereas, long day plants are those plants that flower when exposed to day lengths longer than the critical point.
Short day plants require continuous dark period whereas, the length of the light period is more critical for long day plants.
Short day plants do not flower if dark period is interrupted by a flash of light whereas, flowering is stimulated in long day plants, if the dark period is interrupted by a flash of light.
In short day plants gibberellic acid (GA) does not induce flowering except in few plants like, balsam whereas, GA induces flowering in most of the long day plants.
Short day plants are also called long night plants whereas, long day plants are also called short night plants.
Short day plants normally flower in the early spring or autumn whereas, long day plants normally flower in the spring or early summer.
Both a short day plant and a long day plant can produce flower simultaneously in a given place. Explain.
Four potted plants (I, II, Ill, and IV) of a short day plant, which has the critical period of 14 hours; are taken and exposed to light for different time periods. The light periods given are listed in the table. Potted plant Photoperiod I 10 hrs II 15 hrs III 16 hrs IV 20 hrs Which potted plant will show flowering after exposure to light?
Classify the following plants into Long-Day Plants (LDP), Short Day Plants (SDP) and Day Neutral Plants (DNP): Xanthium, Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), Spinach, Rice, Strawberry, Bryophyllum, Sunflower, Tomato, Maize.
One set of a plant was grown at 12 hours a day and 12 hours a night period cycles and it flowered. While in the other set, night phase was interrupted by flash of light and it did not flower. Under which one of the following categories will you place this plant?
