A nontoxic goitre is a diffuse or nodular enlargement of the thyroid gland, that does not result from an inflammatory or neoplastic process and is not associated with abnormal thyroid function.
In Graves disease, also called as toxic diffuse goitre or exophthalmic goitre, excessive secretion of thyroid hormone is accompanied by diffuse enlargement of the thyroid gland (diffuse goitre). Some patients also experience exophthalmos (protrusion of the eyes), with eyelid retraction, edema of tissues surrounding the eyes, double vision, and occasionally loss of vision. Endemic goitre is defined as thyroid enlargement, that occurs in more than 10% of a population, and sporadic goitre is a result of environmental or genetic factors that do not affect the general population.
