In organic compounds, Sulphur is estimated as:

A$$BaSO_{4}$$
Correct Answer
B$$BaCl_{2}$$
C$$Ba_{3}(PO_{4})_{2}$$
D$$H_{2}SO_{4}$$

Solution

Estimation of sulphur
Sulphur is also estimated by Carius method.

Principle: When an organic compound containing sulphur is heated with fuming nitric acid, sulphur is oxidised to sulphuric acid. This is precipiated as barium sulphate by adding barium chloride solution. From the amount of barium sulphate, percentage of sulphure can be calculated.
$$S+HNO_3(fuming) \xrightarrow{heat} H_2SO_4$$
$$H_2SO_4+BaCl_2\rightarrow BaSO_4+2HCl$$
Calculations: Mass of organic compound $$=Wg$$
Mass of barium sulphate $$W_1g$$
$$BaSO_4(233g)\equiv S (32 g)$$
$$233g$$ of barium sulphate contains sulphur $$=32g$$
$$W_1g$$ of barium sulphate contains sulphur $$=(32/233)\times W_1g$$
Percentage of sulphur $$=(32/233)\times (W_1/W) \times 100$$
