Which of the following statement is not true for cancer cells in relation to mutations?
A single base mutation in a gene may not 'always' result in loss or gain of function. Do you think the statement is correct? Defend your answer.
A single base mutation is also called point mutation. A point mutation can bring a change in the reading frame of the mRNA by tRNA due to an insertion or deletion of a base, resulting in formation of a defective protein. However, certain point mutations that involve replacing (substituting) a base may not result in production of a fault protein because genetic code is degenerate, that is, a single amino acid is coded by more than one codon. This form of mutation is also referred to a silent mutation.
Example, Lysine is represented by two codons TTC and TTT
So, if mutation occurs from C to T then the amino acid added to the polypeptide chain will still be the same. In this type of mutation, a functional protein is formed.

What would happen, if in a gene encoding a polypeptide of 50 amino acids, $$25^{th}$$ codon (UAU) is mutated to UAA?
Choose the correct answer from the alternatives given : A DNA sequence undergoes three subsequent point mutations which result in subsequent changes in transcription of mRNA as shown below: Original mRNA : AUG CAU CUC ACG GAU UAG Point mutation 1: AUG CAU CUU ACG GUA UAG Point mutation 2 : AUG CAU GCU UAC - GGU AUA Point mutation 3 : AUG CAU GCU UAA GGU AUA Select the correct sequence of point mutations that occurred in the DNA.
